2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

If you're buying a luxury car, it's for one of two reasons: unparalleled performance or a luxurious cabin. The 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio has embraced the former. The Stelvio is a luxury compact sport utility vehicle-the first SUV by Alfa Romeo-and one that pulls out all the stops to create a quality drive. Assembled in Frosinoni, Italy, the Stelvio has been available to buy in the United States since 2018. In this preview guide, we'll talk about what's changed since last year's model and what makes the Stelvio a driver's dream.

What's New for 2019?

Since the Stelvio's debut last year, all-wheel drive has been standard. Now in its second model year, the base Stelvio also gets a rear-wheel drive option. Rear-wheel drives slims down the Stelvio by 100 pounds and gives this SUV a race car feel. And rear-wheel drive is more affordable, making the Stelvio $2000 less than last year. The 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio now starts at $ $41,440.

Another upgrade is that Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard on all Stelvios. That's a marked improvement, since at the beginning of last year you couldn't get them on a Stelvio for any amount of money. Other standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth, eight-speaker audio system, five USB ports, 6.5-inch infotainment display, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, power liftgate, proximity key entry, push-button start, rearview camera, and rear parking sensors.

World-Class Performance

As much as we love the exterior, under the hood is where the Alfa Romeo Stelvio really shines. That's because the Stelvio boasts two great engine options, each one a powerhouse of a higher magnitude. The base engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 280 horsepower. There's nothing base about this engine though because that represents a class-leading base engine, if we still want to call it that. The other engine is a 2.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 engine good for 505 horsepower. Yes, you read that right. This devil of an engine can vault from zero to 60 mph in under four seconds, making the Stelvio one of the fastest SUVs on earth. But this engine is only available on the trim-topping Quadrifoglio. For those who want superior styling and a killer engine, it's worth the price of admission.

Steering and Handling Worthy of Its Name

The Stelvio is named after the Stelvio Pass, the highest paved mountain pass in the eastern Alps. It's a circuitous route of 48 switchbacks. And the Alfa Romeo Stelvio deserves its name. Steering is light, the Stelvio is maneuverable, and the rear-wheel drive contributes to unparalleled grip on the road. Many reviewers found this Alfa Romeo SUV to be The Stelvio could probably tackle its namesake with aplomb. Even if not, this SUV can navigate a crowded highway, busy commute, or supermarket parking lot with ease. So, go ahead and lean into those curves. That's what the Stelvio was built for.
