2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vs Range Rover Evoque

2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vs Range Rover Evoque

When comparing the 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, named after a grueling mountain pass in northern Italy, and the Range Rover Evoque, we can't help but notice one thing. In all the areas where the Stelvio most shines, the Range Rover Evoque falls behind. You'll see what we mean as we go through the various features and strengths of the Stelvio and compare them to the Range Rover Evoque.

Reliability: 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Official JD Power reliability ratings are pending on both the 2018 and 2019 Stelvio, so we have to rely on polling from owners. Once JD Power does rate the Stelvio, we think it'll be a good score. Owner feedback say that the Stelvio has great quality and many are pleased with their purchase and report very few problems in the first year of ownership.

However, the Range Rover Evoque has been a bit more problematic. JD Power gives the Evoque only a 2 out of 5, which means the Evoque falls below average. Both manufacturers offer a four-year or 50,000-mile limited warranty.

Cargo Room: Tie

We're talking about SUVs, two models that claim to be five-door vehicles. So let's take a look at storage space. Interestingly, though the numbers are different, this category turns out to be a tie. That's because the Range Rover Evoque has more cargo room behind the back seat but the Stelvio offers more overall storage space when the seats are folded down. The Stelvio has 18.5 cubic feet behind the seats and 56.5 cubes overall, while the Evoque has 20.3 and 51 cubes respectively. In either model, folding down the back seat offers a nice, level cargo area.

Engine and Transmission: 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

If you're buying a luxury compact SUV, it's very likely you're looking for something fun to drive. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio won't let you down. Its base engine offers 280 horsepower and goes zero to 60 in just 5.4 seconds. Jump to the Quadrifoglio trim level, and you go zero to 60 in less than four seconds with a whopping 505 horsepower at your disposal. To top it off, there's a quick-shifting 8-speed transmission that knows its job and performs it admirably.

Drivers of the Range Rover Evoque enjoy its breaking, handling, and acceleration. But the transmission can be troublesome. If you're like most consumers, you'll experience the Evoque having trouble finding the right gear sometimes. That can put a damper on your joy rider. The problem is mitigated somewhat if you don't mind using the paddle shifters to manually shift gears.

Our money is on the Stelvio. The last thing anyone wants is an unreliable transmission in an unreliable SUV. And, believe us, the math gets really easy when you realize that you get a better transmission, more overall cargo space, and more horsepower at a more affordable price with the 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio compared to the Range Rover Evoque. From where we're standing, the Stelvio is looking pretty good.
