The AF Stelvio offers a base engine in the form of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 280 horsepower. This is one of the very best base engines in a luxury SUV. Period. But it just gets better from there. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio offers the fire-breathing 2.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 engine making 505 horsepower. This powerhouse turns the Stelvio into one of the fastest SUVs you can buy anywhere, going zero to 60 in less than four seconds.
Meanwhile, the Porsche Macan offers one of four engine options, everything from the base 252-horsepower turbo-four base engine to the 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine. In terms of acceleration, the Macan can go zero to 60 in 4.5 seconds. As you can see from these numbers, while the Macan is powerful and plenty fast, this Porsche is neither as quick or as potent as its Alfa Romeo competitor.
Affordability: 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio
We're used to paying more the more powerful the engines. That's why the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a breath of fresh air. Because this luxury SUV is not just more powerful than the Macan, the Stelvio is less expensive as well. The 2019 AR Stelvio starts at just $40,200, a steal for what's on offer. The Stelvio's top trim is the Quadrifoglio, which starts at $80,000 and represents near perfection in a sport utility vehicle. Meanwhile, the 2019 Porsche Macan starts at nealy $48,000 and tops out at $87,700. As you can see, the Stelvio is less expensive at both ends.
But the affordability doesn't stop there. The AR Stelvio is also more fuel efficient. A more potent engine usually doesn't equal better fuel economy, but the Stelvio is something special. This luxury SUV gets 22 city miles and 28 highway miles per gallon. On the other hand, the Porsche Macan gets just 20 city and 25 highway miles per gallon. If you want a lower purchase price and then a better deal at the pump, the AR Stelvio is the way to go.
Cargo Room: 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio
Just for fun, we want to point out one more category where the Stelvio wins out. Though these are luxury performance vehicles, they are also SUVs. There should be storage space in an SUV. The AR Stelvio boasts 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats, and 56.5 cubic feet of cargo space when you fold down those seats. Even better, the second row folds nearly flat and the load height is pretty low for easy hauling.
Meanwhile, the Porsche Macan offers just 18 cubic feet or 53 cubes with the back seat folded down. Once again, the Macan gets close but trails the Stelvio in every one of our categories.
