2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia vs Mercedes-Benz C Series
2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia vs Mercedes-Benz C Series
Mercedes-Benz may have the recognizable name, one synonymous with quality and class, but Alfa Romeo should be right up there alongside it. How can we be so sure? There are certain benchmarks and indicators that demonstrate true quality. German and Italian manufacturing go head-to-head in this comparison guide to the Giulia and C series.
Price: 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia
We imagine that this first category's winner will be a surprise to no one. Mercedes-Benz banks on its name and sets its prices accordingly. Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo, a relative newcomer to the United States, tries to deliver quality at reasonable prices. The 2019 Giulia starts at just $38,500. For that price, you get a 280-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, sporty rear-wheel drive, leather seats, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, and rearview camera. Your infotainment comes on a 6.5-inch screen, console-mounted control knob, 3 USB ports, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an 8-speaker audio system. That's a lot of standard features for a great price.
The Mercedes-Benz costs a fair bit more, starting at $41,400. If you're not content at that trim level, be prepared to pay a whole lot. The next trim level, the Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43, costs $13,000 more than the base C300. The base engine is a 255-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, 9-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive. Though the Mercedes's engine is weaker and offers fewer standard USB ports, the C-series does boast a few standard features the Giulia doesn't, such as HD Radio, sunroof, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
Acceleration: 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia
You've already seen that the Alfa Romeo Giulia's base engine surpasses the base engine of the Mercedes-Benz C300. This may come as a surprise, but the divide only widens as we look at the better engine options. The best the Giulia has to offer is a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 delivering an astounding 505 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. This little engine that could goes zero to 60 in just 3.6 seconds. That's blistering acceleration the likes of which will make any owner proud.
Meanwhile, the Mercedes Benz's other engine is a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 good for 503 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. And while this powerhouse is impressive, the Alfa Romeo Giulia still beats it in a race to 60 mph. The Mercedes Benz AMG C63 S can do reach that speed in 3.9 seconds, just a hair later than the 2019 Giulia. And, of course, the Giulia is still $2,000 less expensive, even at the top-tier, top-engine level.
If you're considering a small luxury car because you have the need for speed, consider the 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia. If you're looking for luxury but want to save a little money, still consider the Alfa Romeo. Mercedes-Benz might have the name, but the Alfa Romeo Giulia has the performance where it counts.
