2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia
2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia
Now it's time for something completely different. If you want a luxury sedan but the conventional Mercedes, Audi, and BMW don't do it for you?. If you want European engineering, but not necessarily German styling?. If you want an extra dash of sportiness in your sports car?. Then it's time to meet the Alfa Romeo Giulia (the Italian variation of the name Julia). This Italian sports sedan is new for the American market, and we think the Giulia is worth a closer look--and a test drive.
Bellissimo
The Giulia certainly leaves an impression, especially after you see this sport sedan for the first time. The hood has two contoured grooves that point to the distinctive Alfa Romeo V-shaped grille. The entire car is only 15 feet long, giving this car a compact, robust silhouette. In fact, the Giulia has the shortest body length in its class, while also being the widest. Cargo space is at a premium, with only 12 cubic feet available in the trunk. But flowing body lines keep this sports sedan from looking squat though. Instead, the Giulia looks wind-swept, continually in motion, strikingly beautiful. In a word, the Giulia is quintessentially Italian.
Quadrifoglio
The base engine on the Alfa Romeo Giulia is a 280-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, delivering 206 pound-feet of torque and getting 24 city miles and 33 highway miles per gallon. But step up to the top-tier Quadrifoglio trim level and find the holy grail of sporty engines. We're talking about the potent 505-horsepower 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine, generating 443 pound-feet of torque. Those would be impressive numbers even on a full-size SUV, but put them on a trim sports sedan and we're talking astounding power and acceleration. The Giulia Quadrifoglio goes zero to 60 in just 3.9 seconds! Quadrifoglio might mean four-leaf clover in English, but for our intents and purposes, the word might as well mean speed-demon.
Sicurezza
This may not cross your mind when looking at the Alfa Romeo Giulia, but that sport sedan is also one safe little car. In fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Giulia their highest distinction, a 2017 Top Safety Pick+. What makes the Giulia so safe? With its Forward Collision Warning Plus active safety feature, the Giulia can anticipate a collision and hit the brakes even if you don't see it. As a result, this Alfa Romeo can outright avoid a 12-mph impact and reduce the severity of 25-mph impact. That netted the Giulia a Superior rating on the front crash prevention test. There's plenty of other life-saving, crash-preventing safety tech, like Adaptive Cruise Control Plus with full stop, Lane Departure Warning, automatic high-beams, blind-spot monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, and auto-dimming exterior mirrors.
If you want belleza, sicurezza, and potenza all in one car (that's beauty, safety, and power, for those of you keeping track at home), test drive a 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia.
